The Stone Crafting Workshop

Приєднався 12 сер 2018
I have spent all my working life as stone and marble mason and stone-engraver a large part of this channel reflects this, I love anything to do with natural stone, but also most things crafty. I hope my enthusiasm rubs off on others will get you to try crafting in stone!
I am also a keen DIYer and am willing to make or repair just about anything (except cars) and a tool nut and am a sucker about buying new bits of kit.
If you do take up stone work, do make a risk assessment and take all sensible precautions, dust masks and goggles are cheap, eyes and lung priceless! (end of sermon)

ONYX, WOLF HEAD PENDANT
Another beautiful piece of stone rescued from landfill!
I carved this entirely using a mini bench grinder with flexible dremel type attachment, diamond burrs and paper carbide polishing discs. These tools are available to anyone so why not have a go yourself?
Each time a make a stone carved wolfs head pendant it seems to come out completely different. I suppose this is because I do not have any great plan and make these pretty much by the seat of my pants!
I have rescued dozens of different marble and stone pieces for carving and I hope to show a few more different types of stone and different designs in the future. However I don't really plan these videos, I simply make what I fancy doing at the time.

Stone Carving an Onyx Marble Pendant.
Переглядів 6062 місяці тому
Onyx marble is simply a type of Limestone, this beautiful piece was destined for landfill, so I re-purposed it, in this case as a pendant. Carved and polished mostly using a rotary Dremel type tool. If you would like to try something like this always use water as a lubricant, this reduces wear and tear on your diamond burrs and improves the cutting performance hugely!
THE BEST WAY TO BURN PALLET WOOD!

If like me you burn pallet wood on your log burning stove you will already know that this free timber burns too fast to be a proper substitute for "tree logs". However that need not be the case! Using this little hack you can quickly and easily turn your pallet wood into useful and free logs.

In this video we take a look at the three basic types of diamond blades and talk about what they are best for and how they work. Hopefully from this video you will be able to make sense of the various blades on offer, not only these basic types but also understand better the hybrid blad...
WHY YOUR ROCKS WON'T POLISH - 4 main reasons for rock tumbler failure.

Are you failing to achieve a good polish in your rock tumbling? These are the four main reason why I think many novice beginners fail at rock tumbling. Spoiler alert, it's down to Borax and soap, choosing the wrong type of polishing powder, a failure at the first stage of tumbling and choosing the wrong stones to start with. Just a Dremel, Stone Carving - Wolf Pendant. You can do this!
Переглядів 18 тис.Рік тому
I wanted to carve a Wolfs head pendant using only Dremel type tools, no large saw or routers. The stone is Welsh slate which is a beautiful stone to carve, soft enough to carve easily but hard enough to take a sharp edge and strong enough to be able to make smaller intricate pieces. It is the ideal material for beginners to learn rotary stone carving on. If you have any questions about the proc...
Dremel Stone Carving Owl Pendant.

This Owl mask pendant is made form Welsh Slate, probably the best stone for beginners to use when learning stone carving with a Dremel type tool. The design did not work out quite as I had visualized it but it did turn out OK and turned out to be a quite striking stylized Owl! It took me about three hours to make and so I can only show a short snippet of each stage of the crafting process but if...
PARKSIDE WOOD TURNING LATHE - IS THIS GOOD FOR BEGINNERS?

User review of the Parkside wood lathe PDM600 B2, is this the best wood lathe for a beginner wood turner? How do you decide if you actually want to take up wood turning as a hobby or not? I found the first few hours of using the chisels to be a scary and daunting experience. (and I have been using power tools all my working life). Why you should not buy a microwave kiln!
Переглядів 42 тис.2 роки тому
Microwave kiln review, and why in my opinion you should not buy one! I use this for firing metal clay, I have been firing using a torch but was finding that method to be somewhat unreliable, the results inconsistent. This microwave kiln certainly worked and gave me a lot more consistency in firing my copper clay items. So why do I not reccomend you buy this? Well, you will have to watch the vid...
The only way to drill Agate and Jasper easy!
Переглядів 34 тис.2 роки тому
Drilling polished stones, Agate and Jasper, for jewellery mounting with a Dremel or Parkside rotary tool takes such a long time that it can be really off-putting. This is the only useful method of drilling hard stones. I have been drilling my Agate and Jasper polished tumble stones to make pendants using a Dremel with diamond tipped drills for the past couple of years. However it does take a fa...
TJUGO Ikea super battery charger

TJUGO from Ikea. We have used this super little battery charger for over a year. It takes eight rechargeable AA or AAA batteries and will not only charge them but stores them in a state of full charge until needed. It has a warning light to warn of malfunctioning batteries which is a great feature making it fairly easy to identify the offending unit.
Tumbling Rocks with Plastic Beads

If you have not tried tumbling your rocks using plastic beads or poly pellets, perhaps now is the time to try them! THE BIG ROCK TUMBLE POLISH CHALLENGE! Which is the best polish to use in your rock tumbler?
Переглядів 7 тис.2 роки тому
I wanted to know which rock tumbler polish was the best one? Every rock tumbler has his or her favourite, but which polish really is the best? The only way to know for sure was to set up a subjective test comparing the four most popular rock tumbling polishes. To achieve this I tumbled four barrels of stones in exactly the same way, side by side, mixing all four barrels of stones at each stage ...
DREMEL CARVING CARNELIAN AGATE BEACH STONES
Переглядів 9 тис.2 роки тому
My missus picked up a lovely piece of Carnelian Agate on our local beach, probably too thin to rock tumble but maybe a good candidate for rock carving? I decided to make a small piece of jewellery as a gift for Marie for Christmas. I have been trying to carve the Agate pebbles for almost two years with little success, the stone is just too hard! I had to improvise somewhat on the tools but this...

Is there a reason you have the carpet upside down on your bench? Is it keeping the noise down? Have you tried it right side up?
When I was 15 years old I started my apprenticeship and the benches in the workshop were softened with upside down carpet. I have been doing that ever since. We are creatures of habit! Cheers!
I would've put the barrel in the freezer for 10 minutes or so...that would make the hot expanded gas to become more dense therfore reducing the pressure within the barrel....
And risked having dinner covered in gunk? LOL!
What thickness is the beading you are using? The link no longer works so I haven't a clue of the thickness to fit inside the command hooks
5mm
I just started tumbling 2 weeks ago and I’m using plastic beads in my tumble and I’ve tumbled the rocks in the polish stage for 24 hours and when my rocks dry They are still matte and not polished what so ever . Instead they are left with a white residue as if they were never tumbled in any polish. What am I doing wrong
I am sorry I can't tell from here.
❤
Is this made also by man.
I hesitate to get into such profound philosophical discussion , cheers!
Nice work , will this method work on black marble with white veins? Thank you.
It will work on any marble, some types may take longer or require a more careful approach, Cheers!
Much respect for your honesty review. These are on clearance at the minute and I pondered about grabbing one. You've scared me away now, it looks in reality a nasty piece of kit. Unstable, vibration, juddering etc. I think when it comes to this kind of machine.. get it right or don't bother. I think I'd spend more thanks to you. Cheers
Ok, glad it helped you decide. Cheers!
Somehow, something I thought would be obvious is not. Thank you
You are welcome!
Amazing!
Thank you! Cheers!

Hi Steve, I love watching your very informative videos, I want to service my 3lb beach tumbler, I know how to remove the case etc, but could you please show how to remove the large pulley wheel? thankyou in advance

True, another cheat though not quite so shiny. Thanks for the input!
May I ask you to share the brand name of your rotatory tool?
ua-cam.com/video/017tgW-e0Qw/v-deo.htmlsi=Hbb402SFIef5A2Px
What is the power outlet? USB or 110/230v?
230 volt
Can you share the tools that you purchased from Amazon? Like pin chalk?
I think you are referring to the Pin Chuck, the thing that holds the tiny pin size drill bits!
Does anyone know what is the best replacement mini 'chuck' (not original collet style fitting) that would fit my Parkside cordless rotary tool? The original collet fitting is made of cheese and the small spanner has damaged it so I can no longer tighten it down onto any tools. I was very careful and used tools a lot for model making etc and have many years experience, but have found the Parkside collet sets are just too soft. Now urgently looking to get a mini multi chuck, but don't know what is compatible thread wise. Would love to hear from anyone with any info as to what to buy! Thanks, your video was very useful in several ways by the way! But I have watched another about Parkside tools and collet sizes and this has led me to your video and the problem I still have. Many thanks! 😊
I work for a high end pro tile setting company in Canada. We use the turbo blades for most cuts, Core brand mostly as they last the longest through our abuse(Pearl, Rubi and Sigma are on our tools too). Mosaics get a wet saw and we always scribe whenever we can because it's fast and no dust. I just upgraded to a Montolit 28" cutter with the mosaic mat, waiting for my next mosaic install. I don't think we use continuous rim outside glass tiles.
I suspect each workshop has its own favourites, thank you for the contribution!
One of your diamond blades was not dicussed. It did not have breaks, it had curves. This blade is continuous. I have such a diamond blade. It appears to run in what intuitively seems the wrong direction. It also seems to be wobbling. I would have liked hearing you mention this blade. David Lixenberg
sounds like the turbo blade, hope this helps
Thank you! Quite helpful! Much appreciated!
Cheers!
I have an angele grinder and today had to figure out for the first time how to replace the blade, first video was ridiculous; then I found your video and thanks for uploading it, very useful.
You are welcome!
Have you used any cordless version and would you recommend any?
I have never used a cordless one, sorry I can't advise you.
Beautiful work. I just chanced on your channel and love the advice. I am your new student. Keep doing more videos like this. Thank you in advance ❤
Thank you! Will do!
Obrigada pelo vídeo, me ajudou a instalar a minha!
You are welcome!
My kids gave me a rock tumbler floor my birthday which contained the rocks and four packets. They became snotty but didn’t end up with a shine. I followed the guide lines on the insert. The last section was to do them in food grade oil. We had a tumbler when I was little and the rocks came out shiny. Definitely not rule one, as the rocks were provided. Which role did I break? Please help. Sharon
The instructions supplied with many tumblers are often wrong, written by sales staff, the rocks supplied are often mixed hardnesses and that does not help. Oil should not be needed. I can only suggest you look through more video tutorials, there are plenty on my channel and others. Rock tumbling is a great hobby but it can take a few attempt to get the process right. Best of luck!
"Ripply effect" is called orange peel.
Ok ta!
Have they reduced the overall heat? It seems since the outer coating is a bit more reflective, it should help with that? Currently I have an issue where the direct sunlight heats up the apartment quite a bit
It does reduce the heat, but not as well as a silver reflective would do.
Why don't you use water on an angle grinder? I have seen people splash water as they cut, or use water attachments that you can hook onto a tap or hose.
As a rule an anglegrinder is so fast it needs lots of water and will spray the water everywhere, sometimes bouncing the spray back over the machine, not a trick for the faint-hearted. Cheers
@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 you can buy a attachment that covers the blade, so it shouldn't splash anything.
@@DragonXDrei You can't attach things to your grinder and cut effectively. Trust me, you can't really use water with an angle grinder unless you enjoy wasting time and making a huge mess. We cut 4' hard porcelain with the turbo blades on repeat for weeks and the blades still hold up if you don't use them too aggressively
I'm interested in your use for copper clay. Copper clay can be a hit and miss process at best. The copper clay I use says to put it into a heated kiln on a steel mesh and heat for 30 minutes but you are only firing for 8 minutes? Is the copper sintering? What's the longest you've fired for in the microwave kiln? Perhaps a video of firing copper clay in your microwave kiln?
You are right to say that firing copper clay is a bit hit and miss, I do have mixed results with both torch firing and the microwave kiln. The microwave kiln is almost impossible to fire with any consistent results, the size and thickness of the piece and the starting temperature can make for big variations difficult to predict.
I toss the book with words aside and simply watch this before I attempt to use it
Thank you and take care!
Hi,Drilling a hole in a quartz crystal and then covering the hole in such a way that the crystal looks natural is it possible?
I am not sure what you are trying to do. If you mean filling the hole and trying to make the repair invisible then That would be quite difficult, the only thing that might work would be a water clear epoxy or acrylic. If you are trying to cover the damage around an eye-pin, some eye-pins have a collar around the pin to hide the hole. Hope this helps.
I think I remember when there wasn't any washer at all, and my first angle grinder (Wolf) had an on/off switch like a light switch. spindle lock, what's one of those?
Careful, you may be owning up to being as old as me! Cheers.
@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 But I still look 30yrs old!
Joking apart I think the steel 'washer' is there to protect the 7/8" hole from becoming elliptical or larger which would make using the disc dangerous to use. And it IS 7/8 of an inch diameter not 22 or 22.2 or 22.23mm. The USA wouldn't stand for it.
Ty sir for the great idea! May I ask if this will work with rubber belts? (Like the ones inside cassettes and VCRs?
I don't think rubber fuses like this, but I am nor sure. Let me know if you try it! Cheers!
@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 Tyvm. Rubber indeed won't fuse. I did try. It chars and becomes brittle... Someone said the only way is "rubber cement" or superglue which does not stay as much and breaks..
Gasses usually come from acidic out put. sometimes just adding some sodium carbonate can stop the gas build up.
Thanks for this, cheers!
Wow! Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Well produced and presented.
Thank you
Thank you for making this. It's a simple enough concept but somehow one that hadn't occurred to me. This is quite helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
EXCELLENT video thanks learned so much
Glad it was helpful!
Decided to have a go. bought Evans 3llb tumbler kit. Having problems with leaky Barrel (plastic). woke to sludge on rollers Grrr. any advice on cleaning dried on sludge from rollers? it reminds me of trying to get carbon off gas regulator on an SLR (rifle)
Well sorted the leaking problem. instructions said use warm water to help get lid off if tight. Solution was to soak caps in boiling boiling water. push first cap down and let cool, fill with stones grit n water. last cap pushed on n Burped air out and left to cool before starting the tumble. no leaks. Happy Bunny!
I would suggest you try to obtain rubber barrels asap. They will make your tumbling experience far more enjoyable! Bets of luck and enjoy your tumbling
The disc must be mounted so that the metal ring is oriented towards the grinder, that is, facing inward. The metal ring must be in direct contact with the backing flange on the grinder's spindle. Also pay attention to the expiration date of the disc, which is printed on the metal ring of the mounting hole.
You and this Video are GREAT......Thanks so much from US....Make more videos, please!!!
Thank you! Will do!
Yeah but that looks silly
Ok,
Thank you do much for s very informative video. I am new to rock tumbling and this is of great benefit to me. Could you tell me what size tumbler drums you used for this experiment please. Many thanks from Australia.
Hi, the barrels are 3lb size. Best of luck and enjoy your tumbling
The current version is unusable too much vibration noise is too loud, tested 2 units both with failure
Thank you for your information, I have not tried the latest version so it is good to get feedback from someone else, cheers!

@@akierum which version do you have. Mine is also loud E4 model
Could you use the block ends also as they are preformed logs i guess . Great video. Thank you
Yes you can! I burn both the solid wood and the pressed chipping type with no problem.
and how to secure the pin to the rock … ? Glue ? ??????????????????????????????????????? 💙
I use araldite two part epoxy, but I have also used super glue successfully, cheers
Will the core bit leave a middle piece? If it does, did you break it off?
In this case the middle bit is so small that it breaks apart naturally. With larger size core drills you will need to break out the centre pillar, I would just use a small lever. For small, 1-2 mm I would always use a solid drill bit.
I get a kick out of the way you pronounce aluminum as alimini.😉
Glad I can entertain someone, Cheers!

I do tell people that polishing properly is preferable, but this way is quick!
What a waste of time. 30 seconds of useful information max, with lots of repetition stretching it out to 16 minutes.
thanks for watching!
I cant see which way the nut goes on with the depressed cutting disc. Raised side up or flat?
Raised side down, cheers
